After 16 years with the city of Fresno, Doug Sloan is stepping down as city attorney, accepting the same position for the city of Santa Monica.

The announcement was made official on Tuesday evening.

He currently oversees 148 employees, including the Code Enforcement division. He also oversees 28 attorneys and is himself the lead attorney for the mayor, city manager, city council, and city staff.

“I have loved my 16 years here at the Fresno City Attorney’s Office, especially the wonderful group of people in the office who have become lifelong friends,” Sloan said in a statement. “The decision to leave was very difficult, but Santa Monica is an incredible opportunity that I’m looking forward to.”

Sloan worked under three city governments and with more than a dozen council members during his nine years as head of the city’s legal department.

“I have mixed emotions about the departure of City Attorney Doug Sloan from the City of Fresno,” Mayor Jerry Dyer said. “I am thrilled for Doug in his new role as Santa Monica City Attorney. However, Doug’s experience, knowledge and political acumen will be very difficult to replace at Fresno. Fortunately, Doug has built a very solid team of lawyers in his office, which will minimize the impact felt in the legal field.

Sloan will be honored at the Fresno City Council meeting on May 26, which will officially be Doug Sloan Day in the city of Fresno.

“I had the pleasure of working with Doug Sloan for over 16 years. He was a dedicated leader and accomplished professional working in a form of government that was out of the ordinary. I will miss her wry sense of humor and wish her nothing but the best in her new position,” said City Manager Georgeanne White.

Sloan’s last day of work will be June 3.
