John Luben, a young man from Vunamami First Ward in Kokopo District, East New Britain Province, is a friendly face at the BNBM Hardware Center in Kokopo.
He is the team leader of the shipping section at the Kokopo branch.
Mr. Luben said they usually receive orders or deal with customers from other provinces in the New Guinea Islands where they ship by ship.
“I love my job because when I wake up in the morning I thank God for giving me another chance to do what I love because it’s my bread and butter,” Mr Luben said.
From a broken family and tuition issues after 12th grade, he tried to improve his grades but saw that life was difficult and so sought employment in hardware companies.
“Customer service is very important because you deal with customers with different attitudes and you have to talk to them politely and friendly because that’s important if you want to keep your customers.
“One thing I love about my job is helping and dealing with people from all walks of life and from different places every day at work.
“I see the importance of my work as it contributes to the success of the business,” he said.
Mr Luben said from what he has earned he has now ventured into rental accommodation which is nearing completion as his village is near Kokopo and there is a need.
He saw the opportunity and decided to exploit it and also run a store to support his family.
He said he went through many challenges but overcame them because as a breadwinner he believes that when you love your job it seems to bring satisfaction and give back.
He now encourages young people to start somewhere and love what they do and build from there.
“You are not alone, there are many people still looking for jobs and you are lucky to have one,” Mr Luben said.
